The Painting
from A DAY LIKE A THOUSAND YEARS
In a sunlit room, a girl in a white summer dress is curled up on a small sofa, reading.
Her bare feet are tucked comfortably to the side, one leg bent, the other extended just slightly. Her expression is serious, absorbed. The fingers of her left hand play gently with a strand of her brown hair, while her right hand rests on the open book in her lap. Beside her, on the floor, sits a small wicker basket filled with letters.
The painting is naturalistic, lovingly detailed. And yet there’s something elusive about it. The light doesn’t seem to come from the window, or even the room. It seems to rise from her, or to gather around her, as if answering something within.
