1. Films
Luchthavens en vliegtuigen als plekken voor ontmoetingen. Het is natuurlijk een heel genre voor films. Bijvoorbeeld:
uit 2004 The Terminal

Toute une vie
Toute une vie uit 1974 is van filmmaker Claude Lelouch. Andere films van hem zijn: Les uns et les autres (1981) en Un homme et une femme (1966).
Toute une vie maakt het de kijker niet gemakkelijk. Eerst komen drie generaties van twee families langs, en daarmee de hele twintigste eeuw. Daar gaat het namelijk om: het tijdsbeeld en met name de verschrikkingen van de vorige eeuw. Heel kunstzinnig vindt de cruciale ontmoeting tussen Sarah en Simon helemaal aan het eind van de film plaats: op luchthaven Orly bij Parijs en eigenlijk pas in het vliegtuig. Zitplaatsen naast elkaar, et voilà.
Het werk geldt als geniaal, maar tegelijk ook geflopt. De Franse chansonnier Gilbert Bécaud speelt ook in deze film, als himself. Oh pardon: lui-même.
2. Muziek
Als muziektrack bij dit hoofdstuk: Flying without Wings, omdat daar het vliegen is losgemaakt van het technische apparaat. Het gaat om verwachting, verbinding en vervulling. Dat past bij het verhaal.

Thema toeval
In het hoofdstuk “Logan Airport” vindt bizar toeval plaats. Voordat je denkt dat dit bedacht is: dat met die vier vliegtuigstoelen is mijzelf in 2018 precies zo overkomen.
En afgelopen herfst herkende eerst een receptioniste bij de tandarts mij van een vlucht, en drie weken later, van diezelfde vlucht, een stel vóór mij in de rij van de kassa van een supermarkt. Small world. Herkenbaar?
