Feels Mediterranean, doesn’t it?

In fact, this festive meal took place near the windy coast of the Netherlands, where the story and the loving couple in it are situated.

Where does the golden hue in the image come from then?

Maybe it is the soul. Maybe it comes from the inner warmth of the circle of people around them, who deeply love this orphan boy they have taken into their hearts. Maybe it’s how they rejoice when the boy meets this girl.

For these people around them, this is reason enough to celebrate.

They know a simple and profound truth:
Love is what makes the world go round.

I know many old couples who confirm it. I also know enough of the pain and the longing when it breaks or never happens. I know the stories of the in-between.

I always feel a bit like defending myself and this story. Maybe writing a love story somehow involves making a pledge. One day—will that day ever come?—I may know exactly what I am really defending and fighting for. Perhaps it is already clear to you all along.

But I’m the writer here, see? It is a sensitive thing to me. This story is so tender and precious. These lovers have become a bit like offspring. And I do realize I may have a bit of the attitude of an overprotective mom. I wish these kids all the love in the world, and a good world to live in. And I don’t want bad things to happen to them—and if they do, I want them to overcome them.

They would laugh at me, of course, and say: sure mom, that’s kind of you. Let’s take the world as it is, we have things to do. And did you not write that yourself in our story? That true love does not blind but sharpens your senses?

Yet it’s also in the story itself. Various people appear wishing the girl and the boy all the best in the world.

It is not about apology. And not about defending myself.

It’s about defending them. That is a good thing. And it goes by instinct.

The world will always welcome lovers, As Time Goes By.

It is a huge life force. Yes, it makes one vulnerable. Loving is dangerous. And even when real and pure, it is not always glorious. It can be denied, betrayed, or simply overlooked. It’s not always forever.

I want to defend the purity.

Time for a piece of literature and a song. Both fictional, so they will not decide or prove anything. They just show.

One of my many inspirations has been the Flemish novel Hermione Betrapt by Hubert Lampo. Quite an oldie now. It’s Paris in the early sixties. But love stories are timeless.

In it, a flashback: a summer meal at the Belgian coast, with rain and thunder outside. Eighteen-year-old Rudolf sits opposite seventeen-year-old Désirée. She knows, she just feels and knows she loves him. He is too bewildered and enchanted by her to think or feel anything clearly yet, but is led by the pure magic of the moment and the aura of her presence.

That could be tricky in the long run, but nevertheless this is how it usually goes, if all goes well. And it does in Lampo’s novel. What emerges between them lasts through the years, through the horrors of a world war, through misery, rupture, misunderstanding, mourning, deception, and meeting again. It is love for life.

When a festive meal came up in A Day Like a Thousand Years, I was writing in a different century. So much has changed. I wrote from the soul of the girl at the table. She has been intimate with her lover already, and when she is invited into the circle of his almost-adoption family, she feels joy and humility.

She knows very well how she is shining like a jewel at the center. But her loving eyes see clearly. She is all eyes and ears for the gentleness and the quiet strength in and around the presence of this boy. How this orphan child is loved by two large families and how much he means to them.

She radiates as a girl. He is beaming like a young man.

They represent center and periphery. It’s that balanced admiration, like a dance.

Love that does not blind but makes one see and hear and feel more truly.

I may have learned this from Lampo’s novel. Although Lampo is more in the skin of the man and not that much of the woman. His women therefore often remain mysterious, and his men often don’t seem to have a clue what draws women to them. That amuses me, but it also touches me.

Yet it was time to let the girl look back. How the girl looks at the boy, and how much in love she is.

Which brings us back to purity.

There is that same golden hue. Here it is just her and him.

After that scene had been written, the song came to my mind:

Also surprisingly mature. Yes, because that fits them. These dear young souls, suddenly awake to themselves and to each other.

Stories are like golden chains, all linked together. This goes especially for love stories. This is how the subconscious works when creating something. First one creates, and later the whole background appears.

It’s never just a single voice. It has nothing to do with opinion. It is a chorus. It’s a profound, timeless archetype.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a king in a very great country, and he was sorrowful. No one understood what he was sorrowful about, and he himself least of all. It began every day as soon as he rose from his bed. Then he would sigh and sit brooding to himself.

His servants tried to cheer him. They summoned jugglers to the court, who performed the most splendid feats, with magic tricks and fireworks, and conjured doves out of thin air that fluttered about the throne room. But it was of no use.

The loveliest dancers were brought in. They tried to entice and flatter the king’s eyes, but he paid them no heed. The cooks prepared the choicest dishes and had costly delicacies brought from every corner of the land, and set them before the king on the festively laid table. The servants sought out the most interesting dinner companions to cheer the king with witty conversation. But the king only poked listlessly at his food, barely touched it, and had it carried away.

At last the whole country grew sorrowful, since nothing helped. A special minister was appointed whose only task was to cheer the king. But one after another came and went, sooner or later, for all was in vain.

“There is no helping him,” said the simple folk in the streets and in the inns, “but it is a sorrowful thing, and all is no longer well in our land either.”

And indeed, for some time now the poor harvests had been piling up. The cows and sheep were more prone to sickness than before and gave less milk. Trade came to a standstill, because strangers began to avoid the land.

In the mountainous part of that country there grew up a shepherd boy who knew nothing of all this. Every day he woke early, washed himself in the clear water of a mountain spring, and wandered the whole long blessed day with his sheep over mountains and through valleys. In the evening, when he had grown tired, he counted his sheep. He checked the bell each one wore about its neck, made his fire, ate and drank, and lay down beneath the stars. He was happy without knowing it, for he did not think about such things.

One day he came with his flock near the royal palace. He marveled at the proud towers, the thick walls, the gardens, and the flags waving on the roofs. He had never seen such a thing before, and he was greatly astonished. But when he looked more closely at the building and the gardens, he noticed how ruined the walls were, how neglected the gardens, how faded the flags.

The grass stood high, and he decided to go and ask whether he might let his flock graze there. The guards allowed it, and patiently his sheep ate away the tall grass until the meadow looked as if it had been swept clean. Some passersby suddenly remembered how merry feasts had once been celebrated in those gardens. The servants told the king of it. But he wanted to know nothing of it and, as always, stared dully before him.

When evening came, the shepherd boy sat by his fire, looked out over the meadow, took up his flute, and played a simple melody upon it.

At the same time, the king lay under many silken covers in the bedchamber of his castle and sought sleep. But however he tried to stop up his ears with pillows, the sound of the flute passed through the thick walls of the castle, through the closed windows, through the silken covers and pillows, and reached the king’s ear. First he listened crossly, then in wonder. At last he left his bed, stepped to the window, and saw the little fire and the shepherd boy playing.

The next morning he had his servants fetch the boy, and when the boy entered the throne room, surrounded by two guards, the king looked at him sternly.

“I had you brought here,” he said, “because last night you disturbed my sleep with your piping outside. Why did you do that?”

“Oh, forgive me, Your Majesty,” said the boy. “I meant no harm. I was only making music because I was glad.”

“Why were you glad?”

“I am always glad! It is so beautiful in the world. I go about all day with my animals, and they trust me. I walk through the meadows, and above me is the sky. The sun shines, and when it rains and is cold, I almost always find shelter with a farmer and may sleep in the fragrant hay. And if I do get soaked through once in a while, my clothes dry again in the end all by themselves. That is why I play my flute in the evening.”

“Play for me on your flute, boy. I command it.”

“But I cannot do that, Your Majesty, even if I wished to. I can only do it outside, in the evening, after the long day with my sheep. Tell me, O King, is all this your kingdom? You must be immeasurably rich and happy!”

The king wanted to tell the boy that he was not happy but very sorrowful. But he paused and looked at the boy searchingly. The boy grew somewhat uneasy, for the king said nothing. Had he perhaps, without knowing it, spoken foolishness?

“It is truly as I tell you, Your Majesty!” stammered the boy. “Will you not come with me and see that it is really so?”

“All my kingdom,” muttered the king. “Immeasurably rich and happy, am I? Very well. I will go with you and see whether it is truly so. Servants, saddle my horse and fetch my riding gear and my squires!”

“Oh, but Your Majesty,” said the boy, “that will not do with a horse. You would frighten my sheep. It can only be done on foot! And only you, without your retinue. The animals would run away from us!”

Now the chamberlain stepped forward.

“If Your Majesty is truly resolved to go with this boy alone,” he said carefully, “then perhaps, for Your Majesty’s safety, it would be wise if Your Majesty were not known at once. With Your Majesty’s gracious permission, Your Majesty might put on the clothes of an ordinary man.”

The king had never done such a thing in all his life. The matter began to seem more and more exciting to him. He had the simple clothing of a farmer brought to him and put it on. Then he went outside with the boy.

No one paid any attention to him. This too had never happened to him in all his life, and he walked in astonishment beside the boy.

They came to the sheep in the meadow. The boy gathered them and led them to another place. The king walked beside him in wonder. They walked and walked. When they grew tired, they sat down in the grass and drank milk. In the evening they made a fire. The boy played, and the king listened. At last they grew tired and fell asleep outside.

The next morning they woke early. The grass was wet with morning dew; everywhere the drops glittered like pearls and diamonds.

“You see, Your Majesty,” said the boy, pulling a simple loaf of bread from his bag and giving half to the king, “that is why I am so happy in your kingdom. Everything is beautiful.”

The king looked around him. He saw the sun, the colored morning sky, the glittering drops of dew. He heard the bells of the sheep, breathed in the scent of the fresh grass, and chewed his bread. Tears came to his eyes, and he looked at the boy.

“I never knew the world was so beautiful,” he said at last, “and you have shown it to me. I did not know my own kingdom, and now I am learning to know it. And you have given me back to myself. Now I know again why I have sorrow. I wanted a child who would be my successor. The queen and I had one, but one day he disappeared and was never found again. Then I became desperate and swore never to think of it again. I forgot my lost child, and even my queen. No one was allowed to remind me of them. Since I am the king, they all followed and obeyed me, until truly no one remembered anymore. And then you came and showed me my kingdom. You shall be my successor. Tell me, child, will you accept this? Will you become the new king?”

The shepherd boy consented and became king. The old king helped him rule, and together they tended the sheep. The old queen was brought home in festive procession from the distant castle to which she had been banished.

The people of the land grew increasingly glad and enterprising. All went well again in the land. Trade flourished, and feasts were celebrated once more. The rulers of the neighboring land offered him their princess in marriage, and she and the young shepherd king fell in love at once.

One day an ancient farming couple came to the palace and told a strange tale of a child who had lost his way and had grown up with them. He had not known his parents, had always called them his king and his queen, and had spoken confused things about palaces and servants. But he had a good heart, and so they had made him into a shepherd boy.

Then everyone understood that this had been the shepherd king. He himself recognized them and bestowed rich gifts upon the old people, so that they need never worry again for the rest of their lives. He thanked them and said:

“You did not know it, but you redeemed us all and made us better people. For from you I learned to love the world in which one lives. From you I learned to be thankful for the sky, for bread, and for a warming fire. You made me king of this land.”

The old king and queen bowed low, and when they died, glorious roses grew upon their graves, though no one ever knew where they had come from.

The shepherd king and his wife lived long and happily, and they had a prince and a princess.

But that is another tale.

A small diary entry, written this morning, after finishing the final revision of A Day Like a Thousand Years.

“Then came a round of beach volleyball. Rosanne ran about the sand, giddy with joy.”

Oh, my dear diary,
I’m so giddy with joy, just like my girl in the novel.
She is running around playing volley ball on the beach, after what she’s been through. And I am sitting in my deckchair on the sunny balcony.
No, let me be faithful. I was. At the moment I am baking pancakes and will be bringing them over to the balcony in a minute, to share and devour them.
I’m a quick diary writer, I keep an eye on the pan while doing my entry.

I am soo relieved! That is also just like her. She who carries my middle name: Rosanne.
The girl has no other name. It makes her more delicate than I am, although I recognize her mix of delicacy and strength in myself too.
I carry another name. It’s my first one. I like it. In fact that name supports me. Nina has just that touch of a warrior in it. It embodies my strength. And I need that strength badly.

One of the things I need my strength for is to write about love, trust and tenderness while taking in the world news and its terrors on a daily basis.
Let me thank you all, you courageous and faithful journalists. I feel so indebted to you and all your hard work. Your work is so needed.
But mine is too. Both require courage.

And being courageous has worked here. What a job this last polish—or adaptation—has been, on my most precious novel, A Day Like a Thousand Years. It needed strengthening, while preserving all its delicacy. Yes, it worked! Coming of age, she faced what she had to face. That is a birth in itself. Being the story-teller I had to step back and listen better to her. Now this child at the threshold of growing up has been delivered safely, at last. Now it is her story.

I feel it in my stomach, my belly, my bones.
She’s there, my sweet middle named one.

She influences me. Today I am writing almost as girly as my middle named one does, back there in her world of 1972. We’re not that different of course, but still a little different. Technically speaking I am not a young girl, but an old girl. And a wise woman too. But that young one also has her wisdom.

The relief is unspeakable. It is there, sensory, bodily, almost like falling in love, haha! And she doesn’t feel otherworldly at all, she doesn’t feel like a character, nor like a daughter, I recognize her and it is even more than that. And now the girl is safe. She is safely enveloped as that book character, she is there as she is, and is safe, but she has done that herself. Not me. She has reached the shore, and now she has a life before her.

Giddy with joy. That’s what she is…

Isn’t she lovely, made by love?

She has arrived and she is loved. And she lets herself be loved.
Isn’t that always the same miracle?
That once you face your shadows and your fears, and your weaknesses, and learn about your cowardice, and the urge to run away, that then you become the hero, or the heroine. My very girly heroine: you have earned your title! Now you are the she-bear truly. You have won.

I am so grateful. And as always I feel the instruments, I feel the laboratory, all the tools I needed to create this. Wow, Nina. It’s there, in English, with the full soul and body, with the universal glory of a single girl’s story about blossoming into her first love, the first love that is not just surrounding her. She had to overcome fears and hesitations and urges to remain in a dream state to let it happen.

Sun Braid

Sitting on a kitchen chair,
musing in the afternoon sun.
My hands rest in my lap.

In four days, The Fool’s Path will be released.

This book carries a different element than the first.

Where The Sky Travellers was full of air, movement, and gathering, The Fool’s Path is a midsummer book. It moves through heat, light, night, music, and encounters that seem ordinary at first, and only later reveal their meaning.

At its heart, it is a story about fire — the kind that lives in people. The fire of cooperation. Of courage. Of sudden understanding. The kind that can be playful, foolish, and at the same time deeply healing.

A small, dedicated group leaves the festival for a single day. They set out to secure a cure for the founder. They travel to an ancient city to find it, strengthen their minds and hearts, share meals, watch flamenco, wander through streets steeped in history, and follow their own paths into the midsummer night. ONLY AFTER I had written The Fool’s Path, Book II of The Katalyst, did I begin to understand the fiery element that had emerged in the story. Fire as transformation without return. A force that can destroy, but also heal—if it is contained.

In this book, fire is present in the dedication of the many characters and in their cooperation. It appears in strokes of genius, in moments of surprise, and in the blessing of unexpected encounters: discoveries of ancient wisdom that add strength from within. Fire is also found in the beauty of art—here, the age-old flamenco dance, transformed into modern performance.

More hearth-like is the glowing radiance of ancient civilizations that left their traces behind, as if the stones of the summer city in this novel are not only heated by this year’s blazing sun, but warmed through and through by fires tended across millennia. There is no civilization, no culture, without hearths: places to warm oneself, to find shelter, and to gather.

It has been a surprising journey for me. Seville was surprising. The appearance of new characters seemed simply to happen, yet all of it was part of this Katalyst working quietly behind the scenes. Even the title The Fool’s Path emerged only after the path itself had revealed itself. Along the way, there were multiple Grail figures, acting within a Parzival-like mixture of innocence, naïveté, and an underlying wisdom deeper than I had first imagined. In short: the archetypes in the novel took care of themselves—and of me. I only had to follow.

I could do that only because of the many people who have inspired me in my own life: through their presence, their wisdom, their knowing and not-knowing (and their awareness of both), their seeking, their generosity, their dedication. Again, people as they are, with their vocations, their professions, and their own fates to live with.

Again, I do not name them personally—and often I could not—since stories and characters go their own ways. This is me thanking all those people in real life whom I cherish and admire. And it is my characters thanking them as well, because their lives gain color and depth through the people of the so-called real world who touch mine.

Fire itself is both powerful and playful. Fire can be foolish—and it can save lives.

May the warmth of enthusiasm lighten you and strengthen you in what you seek and do.

Everything depends on those who join.

IN DE NACHT droomt Anthony.

Hij speelt schaak met Jorge. Dat doen ze vaak. Jorge is een goede schaker. Anthony moet alles op alles zetten om van hem te winnen. Soms lukt dat.

Maar nu is hij aan de verliezende hand. Eén voor één verdwijnen de stukken om hem heen waarop hij voor zijn bescherming vertrouwde.

Ineens merkt Anthony dat hij zelf in het schaakspel is beland en niet langer vanaf zijn stoel op het bord met stukken kijkt. Hij is de zwarte koning geworden die het spel dreigt te verliezen. Hij voelt diens onmacht. Zijn legers en helpers zijn pijlsnel, wendbaar en talrijk, maar hijzelf mag zich slechts stapje voor stapje moeizaam bewegen. Meestal doet hij er beter aan stil te blijven staan. Wordt hij direct aangevallen kan het spel zomaar ineens uit zijn.

Zijn snelle wendbare legers…. verdwenen in de handen van de tegenstander. Hij is in een eindspel beland. Is dit het einde? Hij voelt zich verstarren en merkt dat hij op het einde wacht. Was het spel maar voorbij.

En dan komt de wending.

De koning die zijn eigen ondergang ziet naderen krijgt een bijna onmogelijke gedachte. Breaking the rules. Als je nou toch ten onder gaat..Maar ja, wat dan? Hij heeft geen plan. Hij is koning, niet de schaakmeester. Anderen maken de plannen, hij niet. Hij is alleen het middelpunt van het spel.

En de koning..gaat aan de wandel.

Hij verlaat de beschermde plek die hem allang geen bescherming meer biedt en loopt, voetje voor voetje, de wijde wereld in. Tot zijn verrassing komen de regels die hem zo beknotten en inperken daarbij te hulp. Niet alleen hij gaat stapje voor stapje, maar alles om hem heen ook. Het machtige leger van de tegenstander mag ook telkens maar één zet doen. En dan is het weer aan hemzelf om zijn volgende pas te zetten. En wat hij doet is zó onverwachts en druist zózeer in tegen elk koninklijk schaakprotocol dat de andere kant begint te aarzelen en twijfelen en hem daarmee zijn gang laat gaan.

Hij was vertrokken met geen ander doel dan voor het laatst over het bord te wandelen. Maar nu is hij al op het midden van het speelveld aangekomen en ziet de overkant. Daar staat de ander, de vijand-koning, stralend wit en dreigend. En uitstekend beschermd door zijn wachters.

Daar moet ik heen! Het druist in tegen elk gezond verstand. Iedere stap die hij doet roept een nieuwe tegenzet op. Er kan van alles gebeuren. Niet twijfelen! Binnen de mogelijkheden doen wat je nog kunt. Een laatste wandeling over het bord maken, zolang het goed gaat.

Hij ziet ineens vlakbij zich een klein soldaatje. Die is moe. uitgehongerd en zwak. Er gaat weinig dreiging uit van dit armzalig figuurtje. Ook deze kan maar één stapje tegelijk doen. En het soldaatje is ook nog eens extra gebonden omdat het zijn stapje altijd naar voren moet doen.

Je gaat een wisse dood tegemoet, denkt de koning, maar hij weet: ik zelf ook.

Hij krijgt medelijden met het ventje.

‘Vriendje,’ zegt de koning, ‘wat doe jij hier?’

‘Oh majesteit, wat een eer! Bent u aan de wandel?’

‘Ja.’ De koning moet ineens glimlachen, ‘Eh..ik wandel maar wat.’

‘Ik niet.’ zegt het soldaatje, ‘ik ben onderweg!’

‘Waarheen ben je onderweg?’

‘Naar de overkant!’ zegt het mannetje trots, ‘Daar moet ik heen. Dat is mijn missie. En als ik daar ben aangekomen wacht op mij de koningin.’

De koning wordt verdrietig. Zijn koningin was enige tijd geleden door de vijandelijke legers afgevoerd. Zou ze nog in leven zijn? Waarschijnlijk niet.

‘De koningin is gevangen,’ antwoordt de koning bits, ‘Voor het geval je dat nog niet wist. Er is helemaal niemand om je daar op te wachten. Ja: de vijand. En die maakt je af.’

‘Majesteit,’ zegt het soldaatje, ‘ik weet dit soort dingen niet. Maar er is me al

tijd verteld: ga naar de overkant en je vindt de koningin. Misschien vindt u haar daar ook wel weer!’

De koning denkt na. Dat kán niet, denkt hij, maar ja, ik ben zelf nog nooit aan de overkant geweest. Dus eigenlijk weet ik het niet. En ik heb niets meer te verliezen.

‘Dus je bent onderweg naar de koningin!’ bromt hij.

‘Ja, sire.’

‘Dan ga ik met je mee.’

‘Wat een eer, sire!’

En zo strompelen ze beiden, de koning en het nietige soldaatje samen, voetje voor voetje door de uitgestrekte schaakvelden. Ze komen steeds dichter bij de overkant. Ze ontdekken hoe ze elkaar kunnen beschermen en dekking geven. Ze nemen tot hun beider verrassing zelfs een paar tegenstanders gevangen en die moeten dan van het schaakbord af.

‘Het gaat goed, hè, sire?’ zegt het mannetje en kijkt van opzij de grote vorst aan, ‘We zijn al heel ver! Wie had dat nou gedacht?’

‘Het gaat inderdaad goed. Tot dusverre dan.’ moet de koning zuinig toegeven.

‘Ik voel me trots dat ik naast u mag zijn.’ roept het mannetje opgewekt, ‘Ik had al veel over u gehoord. Maar ik wist niet dat u zo’n knappe strateeg zou zijn!’

Ik ben helemaal geen knappe strateeg, denkt de koning, ik heb niet eens een plan. Maar hij is koning genoeg om te weten dat hij dat niet tegen het mannetje mag zeggen.

Een paar keer gaat het bijna helemaal mis, want de tegenstander was weliswaar verbouwereerd door wat er gebeurde, maar ook heel slim. Soms waren zowel het mannetje als de koning in de verleiding dan maar alleen verder te gaan. Maar ze weerstonden die drang en bleven samen voortstrompelen.

En plotseling zijn ze er.

‘Nog één stap,’ zegt het mannetje vastberaden, ‘Sire, ik heb geleerd dat ik het ben, die die stap moet doen. Anders zou ik u natuurlijk laten voorgaan. Maar de regels zijn duidelijk op dit punt. Blijft u alstublieft bij mij in de buurt. Dan zal de koningin komen en u beschermen!’

Hij doet de stap voorwaarts.

Plotseling staat de koning oog in oog met zijn verloren gewaande koningin, die naar hem wenkt. Ze is van glanzend ebbenhout, net als hijzelf en lacht opgelucht naar hem.

‘Oh, daar ben je! Gelukkig! Kom, we zijn bijna veilig! Mijn man en koning: bijna gewonnen!’

‘Liefste gemalin! Eh…. maar hoe ben je hier gekomen? En waar is het dappere mannetje van daarnet?’

‘Mannetje? O, die! Eh..die is hier ook ergens, maar…je kunt hem niet meer zien. Ik vertel het je later nog wel. Nu moet jij een laatste stap doen. Alleen is op dit moment de beurt aan de vijand en die probeert het nog. Pas op, vooral van die kant! Het gevaar is nog niet geweken.’

De koning kijkt om zich heen. Hij ziet hoe zich groot en dreigend een heel leger verzameld heeft, dat wit schittert in de zon. De speren en lansen spiegelen en weerkaatsen het licht. De vijandelijke paarden briesen en zijn vlak om hen heen. Een grote stormram staat al klaar om hen te vermorzelen,

Bijna. Maar nog nét niet. Met een nijdige ruk wordt de slagorde van het leger nog aangepast. De volgende klap zal de dodelijke zijn.

‘Majesteit en liefste! Onze kans. Nu! Hierheen.’

De koningin wijst op een stuk van de vijand dat in de buurt van haar staat.

‘Neem het gevangen. Nu!’

Hij gehoorzaamt en neemt het gevangen. Hij gaat zelf op de plaats staan. En staat ineens bijna oog-in-oog met de witte koning.

IJlings, snel als de winden jagen de officieren van de witte legers naderbij. Ze zien ineens het dodelijke gevaar. Ze wegen af. Ze willen allemaal naar hun witte soeverein. Om hem te beschermen. Allemaal tegelijk. Maar ze mogen maar één zet doen. De generaals zijn koortsachtig in de staftent aan het overleggen. Wie gaat erheen? Elk offer is geoorloofd. Alles mag ingezet omwille van het spel. Alleen: er blijkt geen zinnige zet mogelijk. Geen aanval, en er is ook nergens ruimte. Niemand kan bescherming bieden.

‘Moeten we echt een zet doen?’ vraagt de loper.

‘We hebben geen keus. Het moet!’ tandenknarst de opperbevelhebber vanuit de toren, ‘Maar elke zet is even zinloos. Bah. We worden geveld door die ene, onnozele pion.’

‘Welke pion bedoelt u, commandant?’

‘Laat maar,’ gromt de veldheer. En hij geeft wrevelig de opdracht tot die ene nutteloze zet. Allemaal vanwege die ellendige pion.

De zwarte koningin kijkt tevreden toe

‘Niemand kan je iets doen!’ roept ze blij, ‘En kijk eens, nu kom ik naast jou. En zie je het?’

Hij kijkt verbijsterd om zich heen, met langzaam opkomend besef.

Ineens staat de witte koning schaakmat. Alle bescherming die de witte vorst om zich heen had opgebouwd had er uiteindelijk toe geleid dat hij geen kant meer op kon, en hij, de zwarte koning had hem samen met zijn koningin geveld. Één stapje van haar, net als hijzelf daarnet. De twee koningen stonden al vlak bij elkaar, de zwarte en de witte. Zijn koningin plaatst zich tussen hen in, en de witte koning is verslagen. En hij..de zwarte koning? Hij heeft zijn koningin beschermd! Ongelofelijk. Alleen maar door er te zijn.

Ze hebben gewonnen en het spel is uit. Maar er ontbrak iemand.

‘Waar is dat mannetje gebleven?’ vroeg de koning. ‘Hij bracht ons bij elkaar. Wie had dat nou gedacht? Dat onnozele figuurtje. Waar is hij toch?’

Toen keek de koningin hem aan, met een onbeschrijflijke glimlach. Daarin de vreugde, ontroering, opluchting, maar ook triomf. En ineens de glinstering van humor. Hij herkende iets in haar blik. Hij zág iets. Hij zag. Maar was dat niet.. was zij dan..?

Anthony werd wakker. De zon was zojuist opgegaan.

REGINA IS OPNIEUW in gesprek met Seehofer, terwijl zijn auto rijdt en hij achter het stuur zit. Ze heeft hem net gevraagd naar het klooster. Hoe het leven daar is. Of hoe het was. Of beide.
‘Bach,’ antwoordt hij.

Een korte blik op haar, naast hem, en weer terug naar de natte weg, met plassen en herfstbladeren die door windvlagen worden rondgeblazen, spookachtig kort verschijnend en weer verdwijnend, gestreeld door de lichtbundel van de koplampen.
Ze wacht op meer.

‘Ken je Bach?’ vraagt hij haar dan. ‘Zijn muziek, bedoel ik?’
‘Ja, natuurlijk,’ zegt ze. ‘Als kind heb ik veel van zijn muziek gehoord, mijn moeder... Ik had zelf niet zo’n klassieke smaak. Als enig kind wil je op een bepaalde leeftijd je eigen idolen hebben, en het is dan des te beter als je moeder die niet begrijpt. Maar als kind luisterde ik graag naar Bach. Waarom noem je nu Bach?’

Weer een korte blik. Ook al is hij kort, er zit rust in. Van hemzelf, van het monotone landschap misschien, maar er is ook nog iets anders. Ze voelt iets tijdloos, misschien in zijn ogen, terwijl hij ‘Bach’ zei. En ineens begrijpt ze iets.
‘Is jouw klooster voor jou als de muziek van Bach? Is dat wat je bedoelt?’

Een langzaam, bedachtzaam knikken.
‘Ja, goed geraden. Het is daar zoals zijn muziek. Hoewel ik die daar nooit heb horen spelen. Er werd gezongen, in Gregoriaanse koorzang, monotone oude klanken, in eindeloze herhalingen. En toch voelde de omgeving, het gebouw, de tuinen, de bomen, alles alsof ik daar naar Bach luisterde. Ik kende zijn muziek natuurlijk al. Net als jij had ik er als kind naar geluisterd. Maar ik had het ook als jongen op de piano en soms op het orgel gespeeld. Of beter gezegd: geprobeerd. Want ik was geen bijzonder getalenteerd kind. Toen ik me eenmaal in het klooster had gevestigd, kwam die muziek uit mijn jeugd onstuitbaar terug in mijn herinnering. En toen begreep ik hoe zijn muziek architectuur is. Ruimtes en trappen en gevels en bogen en interieurs, gewelven, terrassen en heilige altaarplaatsen, kapellen en nissen, kelders en onderkelders, gekleurde en kleurloze ramen, het samenspel van zonlicht en kaarslicht. Alles wat ik daar voor ogen had, zat al in de architectuur van Bach’s muziek. Ook gevoel en stemming en bewogen zijn, net zoals ruimtes een invloed op je kunnen hebben en je bijna kunnen overweldigen, of het nu door hun schoonheid is of door iets sombers. Woorden die nooit zijn uitgesproken, gebaren die zijn verborgen, ook het onuitgesprokene en ongedane kan belichaamd worden in ruimtes. Alles zit in zijn muziek. Als kind viel dat me niet op. Toen had ik alleen zijn bladmuziek voor me. In de ruimtes van het klooster ging zijn wereld voor me open.’
‘Praatte je er met anderen over?’
‘Nee, nooit. Het was mijn eigen schat. En dat, terwijl die schat Bach heet: één van de bekendste musici ter wereld. In deze kloostergemeenschap moet minstens de helft van de mensen hem kennen. Misschien wel iedereen. Het was iets instinctiefs. Ik moest dit voor mezelf houden. Jij bent de eerste in mijn leven aan wie ik dit toevertrouw. Alsof het iets exclusiefs, iets uiterst intiems is. Terwijl het zo algemeen is. Ik bedoel, wat is er nou minder opwindend dan deze ervaring, dat zijn muziek op een bepaalde manier architectonisch werkt?’

‘Ja,’ zegt Regina nadenkend en peinzend, ‘niet landschappelijk, en niet filmisch…’
‘Precies. Zulke muziek is er inmiddels veel. Maar niet bij hem.’
‘En deze ervaring heb je dus niet gedeeld?’
‘Nee. Misschien ook omdat het niet zijn latere, religieuze werken waren die dit bij mij zo sterk opriepen. Ja, die ook wel. Maar het sterkst voelde ik het bij zijn vroege werken, die hij schreef toen hij nog hofmusicus was en voornamelijk in dansvormen componeerde. Daarin zat al dat diepe, ernstige, dat je hart sneller doet kloppen, net als wanneer je een feestzaal betreedt of een onverwachte nieuwe kamer achter een deur ontdekt. Zijn kunst was waarschijnlijk sterker dan hijzelf. Hij kon niet anders dan steeds weer nieuwe ingangen, doorgangen, verdiepingen en verbindingen tussen verschillende gebouwen creëren en ontdekken, en zo een bewegende klankwereld scheppen. En tja, in mijn kloosteromgeving zou het anders zijn geweest om over die vroege hofmuziek te praten dan over zijn latere, laten we zeggen: zijn religieuze muziek. Het latere werk is echter ondenkbaar zonder zijn vroege werk. Voor mij waren al zijn muzikale ruimtes altijd heilig. Door en door heilig. Misschien had zijn latere geloofsimpuls die ruimtes nodig: die kerken die hij eerst moest bouwen voordat hij ze later kon gebruiken om er met volle kracht in te bidden. Toen is zijn latere muziek ontstaan.’

‘Seehofer, over je klooster. Mag ik jou iets vragen? Wat voor richting was het, of is het? Wat voor geloofsgemeenschap?’
‘Goede vraag, Regina. Ik zal proberen die te beantwoorden. Maar eerlijk gezegd voel ik me een beetje moe van het rijden. Zullen we misschien pauze nemen? Ik ken een mooi ouderwets koffiehuis in het volgende stadje. Weliswaar zonder de allure en sfeer van onze eerste ontmoetingsplaats. Die is tot nu toe onovertroffen, maar deze heeft ook wel wat. Ik wil je er graag meer over vertellen. Heb je zin in een kop hete koffie of thee?’
‘In thee! Een hele pot. En taart en gebak, of hoe je het noemen wilt!’
‘Dat komt goed uit. En iets zal ik je nu alvast verklappen. De rest komt dan als jij jouw theepot en ik mijn twee Milchkaffees voor me heb staan, samen met onze Kuchen und Torten.‘

‘Iets over je klooster? En jouw verhouding daarmee?’
‘Ja, zie je…’

Hij kijkt haar een beetje hulpeloos aan. Heel anders dan zojuist, toen het over het koffiehuis ging, waar hij de auto naartoe stuurde.
‘Zie je… Het is wel een soort klooster, maar eigenlijk is het niet religieus.’
‘Een niet-religieus klooster?’
‘Ik druk me onduidelijk uit,’ zegt hij, ‘het hoort niet bij een geloofsgemeenschap, het is niet... het is veel dingen niet... en voor mij is het door en door religieus, maar ik zou het daar nooit zo zeggen... uh, hoe zeg je dat…’

Hij zwijgt en kijkt een moment lang gespannen en bijna verward.
‘En jij bent onderdeel van deze gemeenschap?’
‘Ja, en nee. Niet meer. En toch...’
‘Moet ik liever zwijgen?’
‘Nee, vraag gerust verder!’

‘Kun je mijn vragen beantwoorden, of verhindert een gelofte je dat?’
‘Jou kan ik altijd antwoorden. Het kan zijn dat het tijd kost, maar dat maakt niet uit. Je stelt hele goede en scherpe vragen.’
‘Ik ben alleen maar geïnteresseerd, Seehofer. Eigenlijk meer in jou, moet ik bekennen, dan in jouw verbinding met een gemeenschap. Dat zou slechts abstracte nieuwsgierigheid zijn. En dat is het bij mij niet.’

‘Nee, dat weet ik,’ zegt hij. ‘Momentje. Tweede straat links, smal weggetje, en dan komt een groot plein met eikenbomen. Als ze er nog staan. En daar is onze pleisterplaats. O ja, ik weet het weer. Nog een bocht door, en dan vóór het tankstation... Een gelofte, zei je? Ja, dat was het. Ja, Regina, een gelofte. Maar één die me niet verhindert te spreken, en als…’
Terwijl ze naar het centrum van het kleine stadje rijden, is er een moment lang alleen het geluid van de banden op het natte asfalt en het wiebelende ritme van de ruitenwissers op de natte voorruit te horen, beide veel luider dan het motorgeluid van de auto.

‘Ik vertel het je beter nu.’ besluit hij, ‘Want straks gaan we genieten van onze warme drankjes, en de Torten und Kuchen. Die moeten we ook eren. Bovendien praat ik nu al een hele tijd over mezelf. Op een gegeven moment wordt dat saai.
Regina, ik heb een moeilijke gelofte afgelegd. Eentje die ik serieus neem en waarmee ik nu moet leven. De gelofte is eigenlijk onmogelijk. Maar dat is met alle geloften zo.
Zie je, ik heb gezworen, zo’n vijf jaar geleden gezworen, altijd de waarheid te zeggen. Dat is het. Dat is mijn gelofte. En sinds ik dat gedaan heb, word ik... nou ja, laten we zeggen: ik word op de proef gesteld. Steeds weer. Dat hoort er ook bij. Dat lijkt me volkomen normaal, eerlijk gezegd. Leg een gelofte af, en je wordt op de proef gesteld.’

‘De waarheid zeggen!’ herhaalt Regina en laat het ondertussen binnenkomen.
En ze denkt: dus dat is het! Dat is het met Seehofer!
Maar ze weet eigenlijk helemaal niet wát dat dan zou betekenen en waarom ze dat denkt.
Ze herhaalt het nog een keer.
‘De waarheid zeggen. Altijd?’
‘Ja, altijd.’
‘Dat moet vreselijk ongemakkelijk zijn.’
‘Ja.’
‘En lukt het altijd?’
‘Nee, natuurlijk niet!’
‘Meestal wel?’
‘Meestal… wel, of niet. Zie je … het is echt heel moeilijk! Ik ben van mezelf een waarheidslievend mens en geen praatjesmaker. Maar toch is het moeilijk! Weet je, als je echt…’
‘Wat gebeurt er eigenlijk als je gewoonlijk de waarheid zegt?’
‘Tja, Regina, wat denk je?’
‘Mensen geloven je niet!’
‘Precies zo is het. En waarom is dat zo?’
‘Omdat mensen vaak bang zijn voor de waarheid.’
‘Precies.’
‘Seehofer, heb je weinig vrienden?’
‘Ik heb wel vrienden, en goede ook, maar weinig.’

Meten wordt een volgende laag losgewoeld. Al is waarheid dus moeilijk, ze hangt wel in de lucht tussen hen. Ze vertrouwt, hetgeen voor haar veel is.
‘Ben ik een vriend? Een vriendin bedoel ik?’ vraagt ze.

Zijn blik van de weg even naar haar en terug zegt meer dan zijn antwoord.
‘Jij bent veel meer dan een vriendin. Ik heb het je toch verteld? Jij bent Rhea!’
Ze laat het binnenkomen, een raadsel met gewicht en warmte. Het is even stil en het geluid van de banden op de natte weg is er weer en de ruitenwissers.
Ze legt even een hand op zijn arm.

‘Als jij waarheid zegt, ken je haar dan ook?’ vraagt ze.
‘Ah, maar dat is nou net het punt, hè? Eigenlijk niet. Ik moet haar wel zeggen, maar ik ken haar vaak niet. Dat maakt het zo moeilijk.’
‘Weet jij waarom je naar me op zoek bent gegaan?’
‘De eenvoudige reden heb ik je al genoemd. Ik had je hulp bij iets nodig. Maar er is inmiddels veel bijgekomen.’
‘En wat is dat dan?’
‘Hetzelfde, en toch anders. Dezelfde woorden. Maar andere lading. En nu weegt mijn gelofte zwaar. Dit is zo’n moment. Jij stelt me een vraag, en je krijgt van mij een antwoord. Dus, het zit nu zo. Het was niet zo maar nu wel. Ik heb je nodig.’

‘Hou je van me, Seehofer? Ben je verliefd op me?’
‘Dat kan ik niet zeggen,’ antwoordt hij zonder aarzeling, ‘want dat weet ik echt niet. Ik weet alleen dat ik je nu nodig heb. Jou. Niet voor iets. Niet om iets te doen. Jij zoals je bent. En ik wil niets van je. Maar liefde is volgens mij toch nog meer. Mensen zeggen vaak dat ze van elkaar houden, maar of dat die liefde is? En jij, Rhea?’ voegt hij er na een aarzeling aan toe, ‘Ik mag toch wel Rhea zeggen?’

‘Ja, dat mag je.’ zegt ze en kijkt naar de natte straten, ‘Weet je, ik sta niet onder een gelofte. Ik spreek ook vaak onwaarheden, maar nu niet tegen jou. Also dann: Ik ook, Seehofer. Ik weet heel veel niet, en al helemaal niets over ons. Maar ik weet wel dat ik jou ook nodig heb. En dat ik heel blij ben om hier bij je te zijn.’

Ze schakelt terug naar wat luchtiger en vervolgt:
‘En ik verheug me nu op onze thee met taart en op jou, en om jou straks jouw twee hete Milchkaffees te zien drinken. Je rijdt trouwens alsof je dadelijk wilt parkeren. Zijn we er bijna? Is het misschien dat huis daar achter de bomen? Is dat ons doel?’

Hij knikt. De auto rijdt langzaam, inmiddels niet meer over asfalt maar over natglanzende baksteenklinkers. Het Kaffeehaus schemert tussen herfstige bomen door, aan een regenachtig plein met lantaarnpalen.

‘Seehofer, het lijkt eigenlijk verdacht veel op ons grote Kaffeehaus uit mijn eigen stad. Bijzondere keuze van je! Daar waar we voor het eerst afgesproken hadden. Gele gevel, bomen, donker hout. Heb je het erop uitgezocht?’
‘Niet dat ik weet. Maar nu je het zegt! In mijn herinnering was het hier veel onnozeler. Zo zie je maar: ook herinneringen kunnen moeite hebben met de waarheid! Kom, Rhea. Gelukkig zijn ze open. Hopelijk hebben de gasten niet alle taarten en gebak opgegeten terwijl wij over de natte, koude wegen door half Duitsland reden. Ik hoop dat ze nog wat voor ons hebben overgelaten.’
‘Also dann: herein ins Vergnügen!’ zegt ze en reikt naar haar regenmantel op de achterbank.

Hij kijkt ze na en voelt zich ineens bezopen.
Hij draait zich om en begint ook te lopen.
Hij rent. Hij struikelt haast over die trappen.
En wat hoort hij klapperen? Z’n eigen stappen!

‘GOEDEMORGEN MEVROUW, WAGONS-LITS roomservice. Heeft u goed geslapen?’
‘Ja, dank u wel! Waar zijn we?’
‘Uw koffie, mevrouw! Ik zet hem hier neer op het klaptafeltje.’
‘Dat is geweldig! Oh, het is al ochtend!’
‘We zijn ongeveer een uur voor aankomst in Praag, mevrouw, de trein heeft geen vertraging. Het is een prachtige ochtend vandaag, mevrouw. De hemel is helder. Het is momenteel 19 graden.’
‘Oh, zijn we er al bijna?’
‘Geen haast, mevrouw, ik zal u tijdig waarschuwen, dat weet u. Hier staat uw koffie!’
‘Oh, dank u, ja, hij is erg heet!’
‘Drink hem zo heet mogelijk, mevrouw, en geniet ervan. Maar pas op in de bochten! Dat u zich niet brandt!’
‘U bent een zorgzame treinbutler, meneer. Vertel me, heeft u thuis een vrouw en kinderen?’
‘Op dit moment heb ik mijn koffie, mevrouw, en die drink ik ook heet, zoals hij is. Verder ben ik onderweg, van A naar B.’
‘Van A naar B?’

‘Van A naar B. Bij wijze van spreken dan. Omdat de bestemming me niet uitmaakt, mevrouw. U bent onderweg naar Praag. Maar de trein rijdt verder en keert op een gegeven moment weer terug. ‘Oh, meneer!’
‘Ik wens u een goede aankomst, mevrouw. En een veilige reis naar huis. Mag ik vragen, bent u op een heenreis of op een terugreis?’
‘Beide tegelijk, meneer. Het is echt beide tegelijk!’
‘Dat had ik al gedacht, mevrouw, als u het toestaat. Dus beide tegelijk. Men leert de mensen op een bepaalde manier kennen als ze onderweg zijn.’
‘U bent een kenner, meneer, dat voel ik.’
‘Dat doet me goed om te horen, mevrouw. En u lijkt me ook niet zo onderweg als veel van onze reizigers. U reist. En tegelijk bent al thuis. Mag ik u een goede reis wensen?’
‘Graag, meneer! En u een plezierige werkdag.’
‘Ah, maar ik ben maar een eenvoudige butler. Beslist geen conducteur of de machinist. En toch, dat met dat plezierige werken? Dat klopt wel! U bent een echte kenner van de ziel, als u me toestaat. Maar nu, adieu voor u, het ontbijt wacht op u in de restauratiewagen. Ik zal een tafel voor u reserveren. Neem echter alle tijd die u nodig heeft. Neem alle tijd!’

De butler verdwijnt ondertussen. Alsof hij doorzichtig wordt, en oplost in het niets.
‘Dank u,’ zegt ze nog, en ‘Adieu!’

Net als bij Alice in Wonderland is de butler al weg. Alleen zijn glimlach is er nog. Bij Alice was het de glimlach van de kat. En bij haarzelf?

Ineens is ze weemoedig. Er gaat van allerlei door haar ziel, wat allemaal niet erg op elkaar klopt.
Wat een man! Ideaal, eigenlijk. Is het wel een mens? Zo ineens oplossen, en dat met de tijd en reizen en toch al aangekomen zijn..
Wacht eens..?

Een engel! Het is natuurlijk een engel! Maar, maar… een engel die koffie serveert?

Ze zucht, drinkt haar koffie en bladert in het prospectus van de nachttrein-service. Wagon-Lits in de een en twintigste eeuw. En dan valt haar blik op de tekst:

“Bij de bediening van onze gasten maken wij gebruik van de nieuwste generatie robots. Uw e-steward staat ten allen tijde tot uw beschikking. Mocht u vragen, klachten of opmerkingen hebben, dan kunt u de QR code scannen en uw commentaar achterlaten. Wij wensen u een prettige reis.”

Ze zucht opnieuw. Ze bevindt zich nu in een complexe, onoplosbare, metafysische, een en twintigste-eeuwse puzzel.
Ideale man, engel èn robot.

The procession climbs the hill in silence, each person carrying a flame.
Seen from a distance, the line of lights looks almost weightless —
a string of small stars ascending toward a darker sky.

And then the circle forms.
Fire touching fire, until the whole clearing glows.

It is here that Anthony steps forward, as if he were emerging from a Chagall dream — a figure lifted out of color and light, shaped by the courage to just be, give beyond what you have yourself and invite destiny in.

How to render the music and the atmosphere of that moment?
No composer has ever written it and none probably ever will.
This is about this moment only.

Perhaps approach like this:

• Prokofiev — Violin Concerto No. 1
for the impossibly high, glass-like threads of sound
that hover above human breath.

• “An Irish Party in the Third Class” — Titanic soundtrack
for the heartbeat of the earth:
feet stamping, hands clapping,
the communal joy that gathers people into one pulse.

• Paganini
for the fierce, unbroken line of mastery
that ignites after Anthony’s speech
as he turns away and the night draws him forward.

Three fragments —
and between them, a hint of the music that enchanted the people present in the circle of torches around midsummer and how the story started to glow.
